Have you visited the untouched dive sites of Pomene, Mozambique.

Scuba diving in Pomene, Mozambique is a vastly different experience to many other locations.

• off-the-beaten track diving
• there is NO other dive boat out on the reefs
• there are no large shops, establishments, which means peace, tranquility, getting away from the hustle and bustle of people and life in general
• Pomene is surrounded by the mangrove estuary system to one side and the ocean on the other
• a small variety of accommodation options are available, catered or self-catering

When you descend on the reef systems, you feel like you are being noticed for the very first time.  The fish life are unsure, they are going about their daily business, keeping a watchful eye on you but at the same time, almost disinterested as well.

Pomene diving is macro diving at its best, the chance to spend lengthy periods of time, whether with or without a camera, taking it all in.

Winter water temperatures of 25 degrees C and summer water temperatures of 29 degrees C.

It really ought to be dived by you!!!!!

And getting to Pomene is super easy, its either a flight ex Johannesburg to Vilanculos or a self-drive.  Please bear in mind that the turnoff from the main road through the National Reserve will require at least a difflock vehicle.  If you do not have this, we can arrange a pick-up for you either in Massinga or at Vilanculos airport.

Southern Right Whale encounter sardine run 2026 was an exceptional moment.

This animal was so super relaxed, so eager to engage with the boat and stay engaged, it provided such a memorable encounter that was captured on drone footage as well.

As we have so very often said and we continue to repeat, the sardine run is not just about the famous little silver fish.  It is about everything and anything that can and does show up, at the same place and at the same time, proving that it is one of the most special times along our coastline and is a bucket list trip for anyone that loves the ocean and that is open minded to encounter whatever Nature gives us within the hour and within that day.

For those that know, Raggie reef isnt just any dive site in our area. Its temperamental. Its very moody BUT when you are gifted with great conditions YOU TAKE IT fast!!!

Its astounding. And on this particular day, it was that perfect day, take it fast.

The sardine run really is not just about chasing the famous silver fish, believe us, it is about everything. Everything that may show up, everything that you may get to do on a day or see on a day. And this is just a part of that everything……

Above & below sardine run 2026

Here is a tiny taste of how we find the sardines from the air and what our spotter pilot sees, this is his workspace each day that we are out on the ocean.

Brad has been our spotter pilot for 8 seasons now, offering Offshore Africa exclusive aerial spotting.
What does that mean you ask? Well it means that we have our own pilot and fixed wing aircraft to ourselves, no shared aerial information, he is not flying for anyone else and our clients can have afternoon after ocean day opportunities to take in a flight with him and spot for themselves. To take in the breathtaking landscape of the Wild Coast from the air is the perfect way to end the day.

Brad is an instructor pilot and a scuba diver and its great to get footage from the air that our crew out on the ocean are experiencing. The eagles eye view so to speak!!!

Pomene Bay, while famed for its pristine waters and vibrant coral reefs, has a deep, rich history beyond its stunning marine life.

Check out the magnificent Old Pomene Hotel – this iconic ruin is more than just a landmark – it’s a silent witness to a bygone era.

In 1954 a man with the name Vic Preen and his son Brian decided that Southern Mozambique was getting too busy for them, so they decided to explore more further North looking for untouched fishing grounds away from the maddening crowds. This led them to Pomene, where they had to cut a path through the dense forest to the West shore of the estuary where they could cross by boat and set up camp on Pomene Point. For many, many years, they were the only people living in this pristine paradise aside from a few local fishermen.

About six years after their arrival a ship called the Berea, carrying a cargo of sugar, was shipwrecked on the South Beach of Pomene Point and Pomene was suddenly discovered when a road was built to try and recover the valuable cargo.

This in turn led to the development of the Old Pomene Hotel, but as luck would have it, this grand old lady, which was once known as the holiday home of Samora Machel, was abandoned in 1974 after only six years of operation because of the war and the Portuguese people being forced out of Mozambique.

Walking through these ruined old walls you can almost feel the charm and grandeur of yesterday and imagine just how impressive this hotel would have been in the 1970’s. Even today Pomene is really off the grid, cellular network comes and goes, there is only internet if you supply it and barely electricity. Some accommodation facilities have solar whilst others have generators that run for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening.

Now for someone like us in the tourism industry, we can just imagine back then what an enormous challenge it would have been to run this hotel at the standard of entertaining heads of state, royalty etc.

After the evacuation the Pomene area largely became a strong hold for Renamo during the 20 year civil war. And from the day of Mozambique’s independence, only a hand full of very small lodges have made their way into or back to the Pomene area, leaving you wondering why someone hasn’t scooped up this precious gem and restored it to its former glory.

Word has it that a large hotel consortium has purchased the property and paid all the locals their dues, so who knows maybe next time we visit Pomene we will stay in the “New Grand Old Hotel”.

Let’s hope that if they do develop this area, they keep it authentic and full of its rich history.
