Inshore ocean research

Every 6 months we are privileged and super excited to be a part of ATAP (acoustic tracking array platform) and inshore ocean research work off Port St John’s with scientist Paul Cowley from SAIAB.

The 3 receivers off Agate Terrace in Port St John’s are recovered and 3 new ones deployed.  The excitement comes when the data is retrieved.

We retrieved the 3 a few days back and the data is just in.  How exciting.

Here it is…….

6 Bronze Whalers (copper sharks)
3 Diamond Rays
3 Duck bill Rays
2 Dusky kob
2 giant kingfish
2 leervis (garrick)
15 Raggedtooth sharks
2 Spotted grunter
1 Tiger shark
2 Great White sharks
2 Bull sharks (Zambezis)
2 unknown tags – an unknown animal/s with an acoustic tag but information not shared by the scientist that tagged the animal.

Ocean research is hugely rewarding and vital in studying what is going on with animal movements, how often they are in the same area, what dates and where they pop up next.
